Mothers’ Union is a worldwide organization of fellowship of Christian Women within the Anglican Communion who is estimated to be over 4 million members drawn from different countries. In Africa, it is estimated that there are over 1.3 million members in different countries. In Kenya, the Mothers’ Union was started in 1908 with a fellowship of women among the wives of settlers, government officials & church leaders. These women were enrolled as members in 1918 but the first African women were enrolled in 1956. The membership to date is estimated to be over 500,000 spreading within the 40 dioceses countrywide. The enrolled members are under the patronage of the Archbishop, the Bishops and the Priests who join them in prayer, worship, and service.

In the Holy Trinity Church, Mothers’ Union is a key & dynamic ministry. Its vision is to bring together women to uphold the following  five objectives:

  1. To uphold Christ’s teaching on the nature of marriage and promote its wide understanding.
  2. To encourage parents to bring up their children in Christian faith and life of the church.
  3. To maintain a worldwide fellowship of Christians united in prayer, worship, and service.
  4. To promote conditions in society favourable to stable family life and the protection of children.
  5. To help those whose family life has met adversity.

Since its inception in 2009, the HTC Mothers’ Union department has worked hard through its membership to bring lasting changes & Christ’s hope to families & within the community around them.  This women’s ministry has enjoyed, able, committed & visionary leadership through the former and current  chair ladies namely:-

  1. Jane Nduti – 2009 – 2013
  2. Josephine King’ori – 2013 – 2015
  3. Lucy Ndwiga – 2015 – 2020
  4. Mercy Kiarie – 2020 to date.

The group has grown to over 100 active members to date. It has also grown spiritually through prayers, fellowship, and service. Its leadership has continued with the training of new members each year.

Achievements

The department has been very active in pursuance of the mandate and realization of the objectives mentioned earlier.

Among the activities are:

  1. Standing with each other during calamities.
  2. Support the activities of Mothers’ Union in the Parish and Diocese by paying the allocated quotas.
  3. Supporting members during their weddings & those of their family members.
  4. Facilitate the running of the church through: Catering services for the Clergy on Sundays & during meetings, Fully equipping the kitchen, Cleaning the sanctuary on a weekly basis, etc.
  5. Creating platforms for members to build their capacity through retreats, workshops and seminars on various selected topics.
  6. Participating in hospitals & Prison visits during the annual Talent Week activities.
  7. Involvement in Community Social Responsibility i.e. visiting the aged, the sick & vulnerable children like the orphans, street children, living in Children Homes around.
  8. Participating in key annual activities organised by the Diocese.

Future Projections

Despite the achievements outlined above, the Mothers’ Union has encountered some challenges which include:

    1. Bridging the gap between the old and the young mothers’ Union members.
    2. Low turnout of members during meetings & in some of the planned activities i.e. weekly prayers.
    3. Unwillingness to offer themselves to serve in different leadership positions during elections.
